Based in Witney in West Oxfordshire & Wallingford in South Oxfordshire, Windrush Ecology Ltd. is a specialist ecological consultancy providing a service to clients primarily within the counties of Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Gloucestershire; although we are involved in ecological projects throughout southern England and Wales. Our client base covers the private and public sectors and includes developers, government and non-governmental organisations, environmental consultants, private estates, architects, planning consultants, landscape designers and engineers.

Our ecological consultants specialise in ecological scoping, habitat surveys, protected species surveys, specialist butterfly surveys, Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) and ecological mitigation strategies. We have particular experience and expertise with regard to historic buildings and landscapes including churches, listed buildings, cathedrals, landscaped parklands, Cotswold stone barns, stately homes and palaces. Our current projects also include a number of Phase 1 habitat surveys, biodiversity surveys and protected species surveys, as well as BREEAM and Code for Sustainable Homes assessments for new build properties and small residential developments. Recent renewable energy schemes have included solar farm developments, hydroelectric power and wind farms.

Ecologists at Windrush Ecology Ltd. are specialists in a range of habitat and species survey techniques and hold relevant licences to work with key protected species, particularly those encountered on a more regular basis such as bats and great crested newts. We also offer a wealth of knowledge on mitigation and compensation measures, habitat design, butterfly ecology, butterfly and moth surveys, habitat creation and management. We work with a network of specialist associates to provide the highest quality ecological advice to our clients, including aboricultural services, entomology and ornithology. Above all, we are dedicated to the conservation of habitats and species through sustainable development and good practice.

Our new head office at Howbery Park in Wallingford allows us to provide competitive ecological services throughout Oxfordshire and The Chilterns and within the nearby counties of Berkshire and Buckinghamshire. Howbery Park offers extensive conference facilities for meetings and training events and is the UK’s first solar-powered business park. Our base in Witney, West Oxfordshire allows us to provide our services within Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and throughout The Cotswolds. With key partners based in Ledbury, Herefordshire and Cirencester, Gloucestershire, the consultancy is able to provide an efficient & cost-effective service throughout England and Wales.

Dr Edward (Ted) Bodsworth MA (Cantab) PhD MCIEEM is an experienced ecologist with over 13 years experience as an ecological consultant and is the Director of Windrush Ecology Ltd. Prior to setting up the company, Ted worked as a Principal Ecologist for a leading UK ecological consultancy, as a Conservation Officer at The Wildlife Trust and on a number of overseas projects involving rapid biodiversity assessment of protected habitats. Ted’s principal area of expertise is bat ecology and bat surveys, and he has expert knowledge of all UK bat species and bat survey methodologies. Ted’s research background is in the conservation of British Lepidoptera and he continues to undertake specialist butterfly and moth surveys as well as other entomological (insect) surveys and research. In addition, he has a particularly strong interest in botanical surveying and a broad knowledge of natural history in general, holding Natural England licences to survey for dormice, bats, barn owls and great crested newts.

Tracy Gray BSc (Hons) also has a background in butterfly ecology and butterfly surveying and studied the ecology of the silver-spotted skipper as part of her degree in Ecology & Conservation at the University of Exeter. She has been working with Windrush Ecology since 2011, primarily on bat surveys and reptile surveys, and joined the team as a full-time ecologist in 2013. Tracy is an experienced bat surveyor and holds a licence from Natural England to survey for bats in all counties of England. Tracy also has experience of preparing and holding bat mitigation licences.

Oliver (Olly) Bevan MEnvSci joined Windrush Ecology in 2019 after graduating from the University of Southampton with a degree in Environmental Science. Within the company Olly specialises in bird surveying however, he can also be found conducting preliminary ecological appraisals, bat surveys and reptile surveys. Olly’s educational background is rooted in ecological processes, particularly at the landscape scale, culminating in a research project focussing on the interaction between biodiversity and habitat composition across a tropical landscape. Outside of work Olly can be found birdwatching, photographing wildlife or foraging for mushrooms within the three counties area.  

Reuben Hayden MSc joined Windrush Ecology in 2019 after graduating from The University of the West of England with a degree in Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Science. In 2020 he graduated from The University of Reading with a masters in Species Identification and Survey Skills. Holding licences from Natural England to survey bats and great crested newts, Reuben’s experience stretches from Ecological Impact Assessments to protected species surveys including bats, great crested newts and reptiles. In his spare time, you will usually find him honing his plant ID skills on a riverside walk, or admiring the botanicals in a flavoursome gin.
